Subject:  Action Needed: Congress Considers $2 Billion Cut (6/9/2004)

To: International Education Advocates

UPDATE:

From US Global Leadership Campaign June, 2004

Congress is beginning work on an appropriations plan that would reduce the President's International Affairs request by $2 billion. Specifically, the House has announced, and the Senate is expected to follow suit, a $2 billion cut below the President's request for the Foreign Operations Bill.

These dramatic cuts could have significant effect on the international programs that you care most about. Members of Congress need to hear from you immediately, as they are expected to begin deliberations this month.

[Note: Our Washington Senators Murray and Cantwell both signed a letter to the Appropriations Committee in May in support of the President's full budget. See US Global Leadership Campaign > Press Release 5/12/2004.]

ACTION:
Requested by June 30, 2004

Send an email to State Senators Murray and Cantwell and your representative to urge them to continue to support full funding.

  1. Go to US Global Leadership > Action Alert.
  2. Fill out the form with your contact information and some sample text, which you can edit. Be sure to let them know that you are a member of the Washington State Coalition for International Education. Here is sample text for paragraph 1 of your email (you can copy and paste it, if you like):

As a constituent and strong supporter of U.S. global engagement and a member of the Washington State Coalition for International Education, I appreciate the support you have shown for full funding of the International Affairs Budget. Please continue to insist that the Senate support no less than the President’s request of $31.5 billion for Fiscal Year 2005 appropriations.
