  1. Introductions.

  2. Overview of grant
    - David Woodward announced that we just received notification today that our proposal was accepted and we'd be awarded the full amount ($15,000).
    - One of the main points discussed involved Asia Society’s expectation that the Coalition mobilize support at state level so that eventually there could be additional funding in state educational system.
    - Having the summit in Olympia is an opportunity to build such support. Summit will be shortly before the election.

  3. Kristi from IEARN discussed her project “Connecting Classroom Communities in the World” which is funded by the US Department of Education.
    - 11 schools and 20 teachers are involved.
    - Two books in the works that will help people learn the IEARN model.
    - Several good models for teaching languages – Japanese, Spanish within the IEARN repertoire
    - Desire to institutionalize IEARN model

  4. Sonja announced that WSU is making big strides in global education through professional development in Spanish for Nursing, Pre-Med, Neuroscience, etc.

WSU Foreign Language Symposium slated for spring, 2005 needs funding for a chair.

Get more visibility for language activities, assessment models and data showing academic success of students in immersion programs (e.g., Angela Davila's work in Bellevue with Sunset Elementary).

October 11-13 in Portland – foreign language conference; good forum for getting the word out

Contact Teresa Kennedy who works at NASA and is president of PNCFL, re language and cultural integration in the arena of science.

  5. Discussion about how to be more organized as a coalition. There is a growing interest in the Coalition. How do we best keep track of information, coalition members, and so on? David suggested creating a user-friendly director of who's who.

  6. Masaru’s summary of meeting:
    - Timing is right (for International Ed). Think big.
    - How can we plug into macro-developments?
    - We are seeing a greater integration between K-12 and higher education and need to continue.
    - Recognizing the need to integrate business and trade.
    - Our work offers the opportunity for all levels to be involved – State, Regional, National, and International – in the process of creating an environment that promotes international education.
    - How do we disseminate/organize information?
    - Be on the look-out for opportunities.

Next Meeting of the Coalition is scheduled June 10, 2004.
