Seattle Location
hosted by Masaru Kibukawa at the Board Room of the Seattle Central Community College. The Boardroom is located on the ground floor of the Siegal Center, corner of Harvard and Pike. Siegal Center is a block away from Seattle Central Community College. You may follow the exits/directions to Seattle Central Community College, and you will find Siegal Center on the corner of Harvard and Pike.   2. Updates from Coalition members:
  • Masaru: Coordinating US Dept of Ed Title VI grant infusing college with Asian curriculum (e.g., 2 years of Vietnamese at SSCC)
  • Will: WSCSS Board member and teacher
  • Lili: Works on trade delegations, group going to Japan with Trade Development Alliance
  • Kim: YES! magazine (50,000 subscriptions), about 2400 teachers in program
  • Greg: Heading up Global Classmates, geared to developing long-term partnerships between schools in this country and other countries
  • Kristin: Big graduation party for OneWorld Now! at SAAM tonight; working on event with Kristi leading up to Beijing Olympics with youth exchanges and international youth leadership summit in summer, plus electronic exchange
  • David: Working on community outreach efforts: Language Works! Education * Opportunity * Hope (related to OneWorld Now! programs and programs for at-risk populations); got grant for developing DVD program for native Americans around literacy for preschool kids and families
  • Kristi: iEARN project director to develop pilot demonstration for integrating international ed in schools; going to Kosice, Slovakia this summer
  • Michele: New job as Director of Educational Programs (Global Classroom) at World Affairs Council; getting training on Capitol Forum
  • Loretta: Has been working with refugee families on literacy, how to help them see education in a different way (tell me how to work with my child); taking summer institute on working with immigrants and refugees on literacy; background Special Ed
  • Aysha: Project Manager for the Summit; works at School of Social Work at UW, does a lot of human rights advocacy; driving force of involvement in the Coalition: what causes us to connect -- no matter who we are?
  • Nancy: Drawn to projects relating to Islam and the Middle East

  2. Summit Update:
    Theme: Building Global Relationships
    Several threads:
    - discussion of technology (more so than last year -- opportunities to share curriculum resources);
    - engaging our state leaders (not necessarily candidates forum);
    - dialogue (between youth and business; higher ed and refugee organizations; multicultural and international ed, etc.)
    - world languages survey
    Next:
    Outreach -- calendar items, etc.
    Connections with Olympia schools, etc.
    Concrete ideas for marketing
    Create blurb to send out, e.g., to Chambers of Commerce
    What is the goal of the day, who will attend, objectives, outline of the day?
     
  3. Charting a course for the Coalition (Masaru)
    Ideas beyond the Summit for 2004-2005
    Coalition needs to be engaged all of the time... how?
    Who is absent from the table? Who needs to be here to help the Coalition achieve its objectives? Need meaningful representation.

  5. Plan to set date in August. Focus may be on Advocacy.
