Purpose: Develop a cadre of excellent teachers of Chinese from
the local communities, as well as abroad
Timeframe: Spring through Fall, 2008
Description:
- Hold two workshops on “Creating Chinese Language Programs,” one
outside of the Seattle area.
- Bring expert speakers in the field of Chinese language pedagogy to
present workshops to visiting and current teachers of Chinese.
- Expand on the mentoring program begun in 2007 for visiting
teachers from China.
- Develop a support network for existing teachers of Chinese,
focusing on curricular support for Chinese language classes.
- Promote educational and cultural exchanges among students,
teachers, and other professionals between our region and other
Chinese-speaking regions.
- Support the development of certification programs for new Chinese
language teachers.
- Participate in the planning and launch of the new Washington State
Confucius Institute.
- Create a web presence for the Chinese Language Teachers Network to
better disseminate information about the group and its activities.

- The CLTN held a very successful fall workshop with Lanting Xu on
September 14 focused on curriculum support for language teachers.
- Members of the Chinese Language Teachers Network are scheduled to
present the "Creating a
Chinese Language Program" workshop for Lake Washington School
District February 4, 2009.
- CLTN members have participated in ongoing conversations about
establishing a Confucius Institute in Washington state.
- Bring expert speakers in the field of Chinese language pedagogy to
present workshops to visiting and current teachers of Chinese.
- We held our spring workshop featuring CLTA Past President Dr.
Jennifer Liu at University Preparatory Academy in Seattle on March
29. Her workshop focused on lesson planning for Chinese classes, and
the day’s activities was attended by over 40 participants.

On behalf of the Washington State Chinese Language Teacher's Network (CLTN),
I would like to invite you to attend the 2008 CLTN Fall Meeting and
Workshop on Sunday, September 14, from 9:30-4:00 at the University of
Puget Sound in Tacoma. The pedagogy workshop will be led by Lanting Xu,
author of the new secondary school Chinese language textbook series

- We are planning for our September workshop to focus on
curriculum design and selecting textbooks.
- Support the development of certification programs for new Chinese
language teachers.
- Members of the CLTN met on August 6 with representatives from
the University of Washington Department of Asian Languages and
Literature, the East Asia Center and the East Asia Resource Center
to discuss how UW can support the development of these programs.
- Create a web presence for the Chinese Language Teachers Network to
better disseminate information about the group and its activities.
- We have created an interim website to detail our activities and
to disseminate information about workshops:
