2005 Goldman Sachs Foundation Prizes for Excellence in International Education

"States Prepare for the Global Age" Report Released
Asia Society announces the release of its new report, "States Prepare for the Global Age." This report, written by Edward Fiske, former education editor for The New York Times, provides an overview of the critical importance of international knowledge and skills to US competitiveness, including extensive analysis of selected state initiatives to improve international education in K-12 schools. The report includes state-by-state economic and education performance data and action steps to inform state and community planning. (Washington, DC 12/7/2005)

Early Language Learning Symposium at UW
A symposium held by the UW's Language Learning Center earlier this month has several students, faculty and staff members re-considering language requirements and when to begin teaching language. University of Washington Daily (11/23/2005)

Richmond Elementary Wins Goldman Sachs Award
Richmond Elementary in Portland, home to the city's oldest language immersion program in Japanese, wins the Goldman Sachs Award for Excellence in International Education. Portland is proposing to begin a new Mandarin Chinese immersion program at Woodstock Elementary and a new Spanish elementary immersion program within the Marshall High School area. December 18-22, 2005 National Treasures of China Art Exhibit
The National Treasures of China Art Exhibit is a unique private collection of 19th and 20th century masterpieces from over fifty of China’s most beloved and distinguished artists. Rivaled only by the National Museums of Taiwan and China, this is the first time that such a venerated collection will be shown in Washington State. On limited world tour, this exhibit has been arranged by the Australian Chinese Cultural Association, its owners the Dai family of Sydney, Australia, and local host, Chinese-language television station, New Tang Dynasty TV. The UW Educational Outreach division offers traditional courses along with a comprehensive lineup of alternative offerings including online learning, certificate programs, English language classes, fee-based degrees and one of the largest summer quarters in the country. UWEO also manages an academically-rich summer youth program for children from kindergarten through high school.
