Summary
The bulk of this meeting was spent learning about youth
experiences with international education and brainstorming how youth
could be an integral part of the Summit. In addition we once again
touched upon the question of the central focus of this summit and the
audience. We also discussed some logistical details. See the draft
Schedule
(Word doc)
Possible Ways Youth May Be Involved In The
Summit:
Provide introductions/remarks at key points throughout the day
Facilitate dialogue at tables during large group morning sessions
Serve as hosts for breakout sessions
- introduce facilitators
- capture the key points of sessions through notes
- we could encourage each session leader to follow a similar format,
where participants are given 5 steps they could take next
- be on a panel
Report to large group where
Convene Open Space sessions
Present during the reception
Outreach/extend invitations to their peers and teachers
Summit Focus and Audience:
Focus:
Networking, sharing ideas and resources, and building a commitment to
advocacy for int. education by beginning to take action. Integral to
this focus is expanding the coalitions’ constituency and working toward
a policy for international education that addresses barriers to int.
education for all students.
Anticipated Audience:
- Teachers, educators (including administrators) from P-20 who feel
that international education is important, both those that are
wondering what they can do next and those who are ready to take
action. This will also include members of NAFSA.
- Youth that have access to international education and their peers
of like-mind.
- Business leaders who have been contacted and recognize the
importance of int. ed. to their work.
- Government leaders and policy makers: OSPI, some state
legislators, possible gubernatorial candidates.
- Non-profits and community leaders curious about the next step
and/or ready to take action.
- Some entirely new to the coalition, but curious about what is
going on.
Decisions (in the past week):
- Hold morning session, breakout session, luncheon, resource fair
and reception in one room, with parts of the room designated
appropriately for various portions of the Summit. Although holding it
all in one room poses some challenges, it will allow for greater
interaction among the participants to interact throughout the day and
ideally create a better sense of a working group. We will work around
the challenges it may pose for some breakout sessions.
- Slide the schedule slightly forward, to change the reception in
the evening, co-sponsored by NAFSA, to go from 5:00-7:00, so that
Summit participants can have opportunity to interact with NAFSA
pre-conference participants, who will be arriving near 6:00.
- Work with OneWorld Now! staff and youth to fully integrate youth
participation in the Summit.
- Create specific email invites for business community and various
other constituencies to be distributed by various business and
community listservs.
