The Washington Academy of Languages promotes world language and English language learning in the Seattle area. In addition, WAL specializes in graduate teacher education programs for teachers of English. Our faculty and staff are the best ambassadors of a comprehensive process of learning that goes beyond language and includes understanding and appreciating different cultures and societies.

- Confucius Institute of the State of Washington
The Confucius Institute of the State of Washington was the first statewide Confucius Institute. It was established under an agreement signed in China on September 11, 2009 by the Ministry of Education of China (Hanban), the University of Washington, and Seattle Public Schools. Beginning in 2020, the higher education partner for CIWA has moved to Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. Seattle Public Schools will continue to provide leadership for Chinese language and culture in K-12 schools.

- University of Washington > Comparative History of Ideas (CHID)
CHID’s quarter-long study abroad programs are innovative and transformative experiences that see travel not as a means of escape or self-affirmation, but as a path toward critical realistic participation in a world that is both increasingly unified and persistently diverse. The primary goal of these programs is to expose carefully cultivated communities of students and faculty to the complexity of the world through exposure to other cultures and through self-reflection, recognizing that cultural horizons are historically constructed.

The East Asia Center at the University of Washington promotes teaching and learning about China, Japan, and Korea across disciplines, across campus, and in the community. Founded in 1964, it is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and designated as a National Resource Center.

The East Asia Resource Center (EARC) offers a wide range of programming for K-12 educators interested in learning and teaching about China, Japan, and Korea. Among the EARC’s diverse offerings are workshops, summer institutes, study tours to Asia, abroad resource collection, and a free quarterly newsletter.

The EU Center of Seattle is one of the ten original EU Centers funded by the European Commission beginning in 1998. The network of EU Centers promotes the study of the EU, its institutions and policies and EU-US relations through teaching programs, scholarly research and outreach activities.

The University of Washington’s International Studies Center at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies provides information, resources, and programs to educators of alllevels, students, business leaders, and the general public. The Center offers thematic and cross-regional programming including annual summer institutes, International Updates (a dinner-lecture series), and teacher training workshops to help teachers integrate international studies into the classroom.

The Latin American Studies Program in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington was established in 1992 and is committed to the advancement of scholarship and applied knowledge about Latin America. The program is built around several region-specific themes and principles. These include the creative arts, the impact of colonialism and slavery on national development, and current efforts to strengthen democratic values andpractices, reduce poverty, violence and injustice, and create healthier individuals and environments.

The Marc Lindenberg Center for Humanitarian Action, International Development and Global Citizenship is a part of the Evans School of Public Affairs. It was established in 2002 to better prepare University of Washington students, faculty and staff for life and work in a global society. In collaboration with international nongovernmental agencies, local organizations, the K-12 community, and across University departments, the Lindenberg Center seeks multidisciplinary approaches to address the challenges of our era of globalization through teaching, research and service.
